Moving house is a very stressful thing today it has been described by many as one of the most stressful things you can do in adult life. Planning moving day ahead of time can help reduce those stresses. In this post we will give you some tips that will help reduce your moving woes and ensure that it all goes smoothly.
Letting Utility Companies, etc. Know
Letting people know that you are moving is so important we covered it this recent infographic. People often forget to contact their utility providers, etc. and notify them of the move, they then call once they are in the new house doing this results in phone/internet/sky services being unavailable – sometimes for a few weeks.
Once you have a confirmed moving date, let your utility providers know so you hopefully won’t be waiting for long to be reconnected. If you’re planning on changing providers – it may be wise to research the best offers before you move and again contacting them advising your moving date.
Don’t forget to also contact gas/electricity/water/TV licensing/credit or store cards/banks/DVLA/employers/school (if you have children) of the date that you’re moving and your new address so that your mail can be redirected. If you find that you are running out of time to organise for your mail to be redirected you can pay for a mail redirection service – which will ensure that all your mail is redirected to your new address for 12 months, mail redirection is pretty cheap.
If you’re moving to a new area or the property is located within a different price banding – you will find that there will be a change In your council tax charge, it is wise to contact your local council to advise them of the change of address and to identify any changes in payments towards your council tax. This link for Kent council tax maybe useful.
Also, if you have any doorstep deliveries – let them know that you’re moving, if you wish to continue with their services – you can advise them of the new details. If you’re moving to a new area – cancel the service and settle any outstanding balances before the move.
Planning the Move
A reputable removal company will not always give a quote over the phone; they will come out to you. This is due to the company taking into account any difficult situations they may have to encounter in the move ie: steps or obstructions, also if there are any items which may be difficult to transport without specialist help ie: piano’s. Some removal companies will not cover boxes that have been packed by a 3rd party – so it’s always wise to check up whether that will apply to you.
The most common day for completion is Friday but if you’re able to wait until the middle of the week for your move the removal quotes maybe cheaper! Waiting to move will give you chance to either arrange a professional cleaner give the new house a once over yourself to make sure it’s clean for you to move in. If you wish to decorate you will have that window of opportunity to paint/wallpaper/fit new flooring with a clear area to work in.
If you are buying new furniture you could have it delivered to the new house over the weekend that you’re moving in.
Once you’ve received your moving date, try and use all the food that you have in your current property – the last thing you want; is mouldy, gone off food being transported to your new home.
If you have to organise storage prior to moving into your new home, it is wise to arrange this around 6 weeks before, removals kent can help with storage.
