About Rye

    Rye is a small East Sussex town with a population of about 4,000 people. Rye is located approximately 2 Miles from the sea and like Tenterden Rye is a Cinque Port. Cinque Ports were created by Royal Charter in 1155, the purpose of these towns was to make ships available for use by the King, in return for providing the king this service the Cinque Ports were awarded several privileges such as exemption from tax.

Rye is at the confluence of three rivers: The Brede, Tillingham and Rother. The towns history make it popular with tourists and tourism is a very important part of the local economy, the town has several resturants, tea rooms and of course guest houses.

Travel and Transportation
