Getting out of the county
Four crossings, and what each one means for a load
Every other county plans a long move around motorways. Kent plans it around crossings — two international, one domestic, and a pair of parallel motorways that are really a single decision made twice.
Eurotunnel shuttle Folkestone, junction 11a of the M20 The usual choice for a loaded removals vehicle heading into Europe. The vehicle stays sealed, the driver stays with it, and the crossing is short enough not to eat into driving hours.
Dover ferry Dover Eastern Docks, end of the A20 The alternative, and sometimes the better one depending on sailings and on what else is booked. It is a longer crossing and the vehicle is left on a deck rather than staying with the driver.
Dartford Crossing The M25 at Dartford — tunnels north, bridge south Not an international crossing but the one that most often decides a Kent job. Anything heading north or west from the county either goes through it or around it, and that choice is made on the day.
The M20 and M2 pair Running the length of the county in parallel Two routes to the same coast. Which one a vehicle takes depends on where in Kent it started, what is happening at the port, and whether the freight scheme is operating.

Kent has an advantage no other county has: the crossings are here. A load from Maidstone or Canterbury reaches Folkestone or Dover without touching the M25, which removes the single most unpredictable hour of any European move from the south-east.

- Do you actually cover the whole county, or just one corner of it?
- The whole county, and the site is arranged by quarter precisely so you can see that we know the difference between them. What we will not do is pretend to be the local firm in every town. Several Kent towns have their own established movers, and where a job begins and ends inside one of those towns we will say so.
- Which quarter am I in?
- Roughly: ME and DA postcodes north of the M2 are North Kent and Medway; TN west of Maidstone is the Weald; CT is East Kent and the coast; ME9 to ME13 is Swale and Faversham. Ashford sits on its own. The coverage page sets out what changes in each.
- Why does the quarter matter more than the number of bedrooms?
- Because it decides the access, and access is what a survey is really measuring. Three bedrooms on a Chatham terrace with no kerb space, three bedrooms down a Weald gravel drive, and three bedrooms up four Margate floors are three different days with the same inventory.
- Do you go outside Kent?
- Regularly — the west country, the Midlands, the north and Scotland, plus four European routes with their own pages. Long runs out of Kent are planned around the Dartford Crossing before anything else, which is the part people from outside the county tend to underestimate.
- Is a Kent firm better for a move to France?
- For a load leaving Kent, genuinely yes, and not for patriotic reasons. The crossings are here. A vehicle from Canterbury or Maidstone reaches Folkestone or Dover without touching the M25, which takes the least predictable hour out of the journey.
