If you are packing yourself
Use more paper than feels reasonable — under-filled boxes crush under the ones stacked on them, and that causes more damage than dropping does.
Keep weight sane: books in small cartons, duvets in large ones. Getting that backwards produces a box nobody can lift and a box that collapses.
Label the side rather than the top, because once cartons are stacked you cannot read the tops, and write the destination room rather than the contents.
Tape the bottom of every carton properly. One strip down the seam is not enough for crockery.
Get materials early
The biggest favour you can do yourself is to have the materials well ahead of the move rather than the weekend before. Packing spread over weeks is calm; packing in three days is how things get thrown into boxes. We deliver ahead and collect what you have not used.

- How long does packing take?
- It depends on the house and how much you want done. A farmhouse with outbuildings is a substantially bigger exercise than a town flat. The survey establishes it and the quote states what is being packed and by whom.
- Do I need to be there?
- Better at the start, to point out anything that should not be packed or needs special care. After that most people leave the crew to it.
- What should I not pack?
- Passports, medication, chargers, keys, jewellery and anything you would hate to lose sight of. Keep those with you in a bag that never goes on the van.
- Can you unpack as well?
- Yes, and take the empty cartons and paper away. Worth considering if you are straight back to work.
- Are boxes included?
- That depends which depth you choose, and the written quote sets it out line by line.
