A full household move anywhere in the county. What the survey is really establishing is not how much you own but how it gets from the room it is in to the back of a vehicle — and in Kent that answer changes completely depending on which quarter you are in.
The most common surprise is not volume. It is the approach: a lane, a gradient, a gravel turn or four floors of seafront staircase.
What a house move includes
The same house is four different jobs
Take a three-bedroom family house and put it in each quarter. In Gillingham it is a terrace on a hill with no spare kerb, so the whole day is decided by where the vehicle can legally sit and how far things are carried.
In the Weald it is at the end of a gravel drive with a turn at the top that nobody has ever measured with a lorry in mind. The question is whether we bring the vehicle in at all or shuttle from the road.
In Margate it is tall: a basement, a ground floor and three above, with a turn on every landing. In Ashford it is on a newer estate with a drive, and it is the easiest day of the four.
Same inventory, four different crews and four different plans. This is why we survey the approach rather than counting bedrooms over the phone.
Kent property types, and what each one hides
Oast conversions and barns look generous and are frequently the hardest interiors in the county: circular rooms, tight stairs into a roundel, and beams at exactly the wrong height for a wardrobe.
Weald farmhouses have the space but rarely the access, and the outbuildings are where the volume actually is. Nobody counts the barn until we ask.
Coastal Victorian and Georgian terraces are deceptive in the other direction — narrow frontage, very deep plan, and a basement that has been collecting things since the seventies.
Newer estate housing in Ashford, Maidstone and around the Medway towns is the straightforward case throughout, and we say so rather than manufacture complexity.
How the day runs
Packing first, ours or yours. Protection down. Loading heaviest and hardest-wearing first, with whatever you want that first night going on last so it comes off first.
At the far end we unload to rooms, rebuild what we dismantled, and take packing materials away if you want them gone.
When the chain slips
Goods can be collected on whichever date is genuinely fixed, listed, and held until the other side is real. On Kent coastal purchases in particular this is common enough to be worth planning for at survey rather than arranging in a panic.

Questions about house removals
- How far ahead should I book?
- As soon as the date is real. Fridays and month-ends fill first everywhere in the county. If the date is still soft, get the survey done anyway — the quote does not expire when the date moves.
- Will your lorry fit down our lane?
- That is exactly what the survey answers, and it is the single most useful thing we establish on a rural Kent job. Where it will not, we shuttle with a smaller vehicle, planned and priced in advance.
- Do you empty outbuildings and barns?
- Yes, if they are safe and reachable, and they need to be on the inventory. An uncounted barn is the commonest reason a Weald quote and a Weald invoice disagree.
- Do you move on Saturdays?
- Yes. Any difference for weekend work appears on the written quote before you commit.
- What cannot you take?
- Fuel, gas bottles, fireworks, solvents, open paint, anything corrosive. Plants and perishables at your own risk.
